Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you look at the description of this device, it is an over-the-air tuner and DVR.This means that ,no, I you do not need cable service for this device. With the monthly or yearly subscription to TiVo, you will get schedules and other times like you normally get off of cable, but this will show you what is available on over-the-air broadcasting. You will be able to record shows that are on over the air just like you would on cable.if you are interested in knowing what is available on over the air in your area, make certain that your TV is tied into an over-the-air antenna, and run the scan on your TV to see how many over-the-air channels you have available. Doing this will help you to see how many over-the-air channels you have available to you and help you decide if you want to cut the cable and just use the TiVo. I hope this is helpful.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Tivo Bolt OTA is a DVR for recording over the air TV and requires a good digital antenna to pull in local channels. A subscription is also required to activate an onscreen guide to select channels and programs to record. It also acts as an appliance for using streaming services such as Hulu. If you can get the programs you want over the air or with one of the streaming services that Tivo handles then you don't need cable. Check the list of programs available thru the streaming services that Tivo provides first and make your decision from that.
