There is about 15-20 minutes of specific order game play, before Online mode is available, or open map mode becomes available.

It's both. There's a linear story to follow and also you can go where ever but some areas depending on your level the enemies are entirely too hard. Like unbeatable hard. Some games theres areas where you can access too early (ie Dark Souls) but it's just difficult but doable depending on skill level.

You can literally set this up to just wander around and find the missions with no help and stumble across everything or you can have a guided path.. But very open world!
