“Does this have to be used as a back-up drive only or can it be used as sort of a large flash drive to save files and access on any compatible device? I'm under the impression that many external hard drives are just used for back-up to restore what was lost on the computer the data was originally stored in. I just want to use this as a storage device to save things from any computer I may be using at the time - at the library, a hotel business center where computers are provided for guests, a computer lab at school, etc. Will this only serve as back up or can I save files directly to the Canvio Connect II for access on any computer I hook it up to?”

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I don't know whether this drive will work with ANY computer but it works with Windows 7 and 8.1 for me. I am using this as a storage device, not a backup drive. So, just copy files to the drive as if it's a thumb drive.

I would just be a little careful that you check it for viruses or malware when going between computers (disclosure: I'm not a computer person so this could be me being a non-technical scaredy cat).

Use a single partition if use is backup only, or file storage only. For both purposes on a single drive, I recommend using 2 partitions, one for backup, and one for file storage. This will work with both Windows and Mac operating systems.
