When you format a disk it wipes it clean and the computer will not pick up the drive until there is an OS installed.

Please try again later.When you format the drive your erasing everything that's already there and whatever the drive is formatted for it will only work for that item unless it's formatted again for a different item. So if it's formatted for Windows 8 I don't think you could use the same drive for something using Windows 7. Not an expert though. Just remember this: if there is important stuff on the drive it won't be there after it's formatted.
