“It wants me to format the disk, should I do that? I am using Windows 8.1 and I accidentally chose to format the disk and now it won't work. I have unplugged it and re-plugged it in and now it does not show up in the control panel or in devices and drives. I also am planning to use it on my Windows 7 laptop and when I plug it in to the computer, it does not give me the option of installing the software when I click on the drive. When I open the drive, it also wants me to format it.”

When you format a disk it wipes it clean and the computer will not pick up the drive until there is an OS installed.

Please try again later.When you format the drive your erasing everything that's already there and whatever the drive is formatted for it will only work for that item unless it's formatted again for a different item. So if it's formatted for Windows 8 I don't think you could use the same drive for something using Windows 7. Not an expert though. Just remember this: if there is important stuff on the drive it won't be there after it's formatted.
