WiFi extenders are designed to help improve the WiFi coverage distance of the existing network within your home; however, they are not designed to overcome limitations put in place by your VPN or Internet service. That being said, if your primary concern is WiFi coverage, this can help.

If the VPN is the bottleneck, I can't see it will make a difference. Do bandwidth test with and without VPN. If both bad, this could help.
