They connect with WiFi and don't need the same electrical system. Maximum distance apart depends heavily on what's in between (walls, bricks, trees, etc. etc., and only some on linear distance. It's very hard to predict what will work, but you probably can connect to 80 feet away, but you may need to spend time moving around the two units to get the best signal.

The routers have to be at least 25 feet apart and typically in the 60-70 feet range. 80+ feet apart and in a different building may push the bounds of reliability.
