“I have an older TP Link system that came with three extenders. I have one connected to the internet providers router and the other two are placed in different rooms. With this newer system, would I need one to connect to the router and the other one ?”

You can use it both ways. Connect directly to the router or in a other room. Since its an extender, connecting it to the router limits the reach so plug it in a different room and connect to your router.
