You can not intermittently activate and deactivate phone. But it does have rollover minutes so if you buy a 90 day 60 minute card which is under $20) and setup an automatic renewal plan for it you can turn it off when you dont need it so you are not using up the battery (although you will have to periodically recharge it). Then when you do need it you can turn it on. The time period of 90 days will still happen whether you use it or not. At least you have rollover minutes so if you only use it for 5 minutes in a 90 day period when it renews you will have 115 minutes. To me the under $20 every 90 days is one of the least expensive cell phones out there and I have been glad to have it as a backup. I use my original tracfone of over 10 years as an alarm clock! so I leave it on and have to recharge it every couple of weeks. I gave my sister a new one just a few weeks ago because her backup/travel phone cost almost double this and did not have rollover minutes so when she did travel she only had something like 30 minutes max! To me the cost and the rollover minutes make this phone a winner for a 'backup' phone.
