Of course, each phone can have it own plan. Depending on which plan you choose, will determine whether you need to refill it in a month or bi-monthly or even year-to-year. My two card plan of preference costs a $25 and $30 and must refill it bi-monthly regardless if I have plenty of minutes left. 
For a $20 dollar 60 min card plan, YOU WILL most likely need to refill it every month or you will forfeit your minutes,data, texting remaining when it expires on the date shown on your account. Sorry Chesses, but that's how TracFone card plan works. If you ask me, it's kinda of a scamp. I highly recommend to consider other providers if you wish to only refill when you need to.

You can purchase airtime cards as needed, however you must purchase the smartphone airtime card, as Tracfone now differentiates between smart and non-smart phones.

The Galaxy j3 luna is a great smartphone and you don't need to use the monthly refill if that's not your style. You can defiantly buy as you go be that 60 or 150 minutes it's just like any other tracfone in that way.

They still have pay-as-you go plans, but you will lose any double or triple minute options you may have had.
