“Why did my headset make a shrill noise when I plugged it in”

The headphone jack is either warn out or you have a short in it

Most likely the pickup as they are plugged into the port. Nearly all plugs do that when inserted into headphone jacks. Keep them off your head when they plug in and they should be fine.
