These symptoms often go with a weak VHS video signal exiting the player. The digital Play/Stop messages generated from the VCR come through correctly, the audio performs correctly, but the VHS video will be blank, a solid black/blue screen, or it can intermittently cut between showing video and not showing video. The best place to start is to clean the heads of the tape player a few times. It would also be useful to have a second VCR available for testing.
