“Hooked my soundbar to my sharp roku tv via hdmi. It automatically turns on when i start watching tv, i can turn it off but as soon as i turn the volume up on my tv it turns back on. Can this setting be turned off? I don't always want to use the soundbar”

No, I don't think so. It is designed to turn on when the TV turns on and it starts searching for the subwoofer at the same time. If you turn off the subwoofer, the sound bar will keep giving you messages saying it did not find the subwoofer. They are assuming you want everything to work together seamlessly.
