No. The sound bar has the 5.1 electronics built in. All you do is connect it to the audio output on the TV, plug it in, place your sub-woofer, connect the rear speakers to it and plug the sub-woofer in. The sub-woofer will sync up with the sound bar and off you go.

no receiver necessary, I connected it via the audio out from my TV using an optical cable (comes with the unit - this can also be done using standard red/white stereo cables, also supplied with unit)
