“If I don't plug in the rear speakers to the subwoofer will it affect the sound? Will it still decode for 5.1? Sometimes I might not be able to plug in the rear surround speakers.”

I would test with and without the speakers first. If it isn't a significant difference I'd leave it out...But if there's a huge difference, plug them in! Mine are in and I love it!
