• A:Answer No, HDMI is a method for connecting an AV device to play audio from a broadcasting device. The USB can only play a limited number of formats from a storage drive. As an example- you couldn't connect your TV to the sound bar through USB, you'd need to use HDMI.

• A:Answer The phone app lets you use you phone as a remote. It also lets you connect the sound bar to the internet if you interested in use the Chromecast features. BUT, if you just want to connect it to your TV for theater quality audio- you don't need the app at all.
