“I have hook upped the phone and set the answering system but when you call the number the answering machine won’t work”

It should turn on automatically the only thing you should set up is the voice message if you have one. I would look at the manual for trouble shooting and if that doesn't work see if there is a customer service number unfortunately for trouble shooting or online chatting.

If this does not help, like many electronic devices, a reboot on the base may resolve the problem. You can try rebooting your phone system by disconnecting the power from the telephone base for a minute. Reconnect and test.
