The transmitter that is left with the baby is powered only by a AC wall plug in. The two monitors have rechargeable batteries so it is really convenient to have them set up in any particular room that you are in charging and then when you need to leave the room both monitors have a clip so you can carry the monitors with you wirelessly.

I have it plugged in when the baby is sleeping and I am in bed at night. In the morning I take it with me around the house while the baby is still sleeping. The main base in the baby's room is electric plug in. It has a walkie talkie feature that I like because I can talk to the other handset. It is clear and comes in well. I recommend these if you do not need a visual of the baby. My son has an app on the phone with a camera and I didn't like it. I just wanted to hear the baby, no need to view the baby, so I purchased these for my husband and I, we are the grandparents.
