I had to have the parent monitor "on" to link them. They also have to be in range. In my small house, the "parent" monitor is a floor below and diagonal across the house from the "upstairs" monitor. There is also a metal beam running thru the house between floors, but they link up. You could put the monitor and "parent" close to each other to test them. That is what we did, and maybe that helped them "find" each other later on.

Also, try to move the parent units closer to the baby unit (but not less than three feet) and then reboot the system by disconnecting the power and batteries for 15 seconds.
