Hi - The baby unit of the VTech RM5764HD should be plugged in at all times to function. The parent unit on the other hand can has a rechargeable battery but you can also plug it into power at all times. This baby unit is not expandable thus you cannot add another device into the system. You may want to check the model VTech RM5764-2HD which comes with 2 baby units. Thank you, -VTech Support
