Hi Dsavage, We recommend cleaning dust from the unit, especially near the vent and checking the cord for frays. The unit should not be left running when no one is home. If you have just turned it on after a long period on inactivity, give it a few days to not smell. If the smell continues or grows stronger, we recommend using basic judgement as to whether or not you should continue running the heater. Please let us know if you have any other questions!
