Horizontal shelf that can be removed. I don't think a free standing fire place can go in there.

Once assembled, the horizontal shelves could easily be removed. But in order to remove the middle, you may want to omit it during assembly. I wish I could speak to if it significantly impacts the integrity of the piece by not having the middle divider, but I don't know for sure. I would also be careful to check and see what kind of heat your free standing fireplace gives off; this piece is made from MDF and laminate, if that helps in your decision here. I hope this helps!
