Not for ps5, it’s plug and play. Reference the video from the Sony website for help if you need to

I installed mine in 10 minutes with no firmware update. Works great and a little zippier than original. Make sure PS5 has current system update before install.

Nope unless you are using it for the PS5 but for desktop you could check for it but highly unlikely you need to update it.
