sure, Gen5 is backwards compatible, at least on the ASUS ATX ROG CROSSHAIR X870E HERO AMD motherboard and chip set. The R/W speeds are still limited by the M.2 Gen 4 SSD, but it will work. Gen5 SSD's are limited to 4TB, at this point in time. It should be possible to install a GEN5 M.2, which will double the speeds.

You will need to read the bifurcation tables closely, to figure out which combination of M.2 sockets produce optimal speed and throughput, depending on whether GEN5 or GEN4 memory units are installed.

Hi, thank you for contacting us. Please know that the WD BLACK SN850X Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe SSD is compatible with the PS5 console. But, only the model of the drive comes with a heatsink that can be installed on the PS5.
