It doesn't need any software to run, the software they mentioned is a utility software that you can install from Western digital website if you would like to. It is optional software.

Once installed it allowed the computer to detect the drive and then I had to use some basic windows software to set up the drive for use with windows. The first drive took a little longer to install because of the learning curve but I was able to get all my questions answered with simple internet searches for how to replace an old drive with an SSD. The second drive I replaced went much faster.
