“Could you use this drive with the enclosure laying down on its side? Such that the metal face (with "WD_ BLACK") is facing up and still able to radiate heat to open air (if this 8TB drive is like the portable 5TB one's body, only one face is metal).”

I use my WD-Black laying on it's side. The shown stand slides off for flat use. I've had no heating problem. In fact I've never been aware of the cooling fan ever operating. I'm using it for recording out of the aid TV with Tablo which doesn't tax the high speed that might cause the source for high temperatures.
