Yes you can use it that way. How ever at least on Xbox one it will prompt you to format the drive do not do so as it will delete everything and it will only work for storing games at that point

Have you tried to plug in a thumb drive with a couple of sample movies to see if the video codecs are supported by the Playstation or X-Box? You might need to reformat the 10tb drive to ntfs format to support large files. (I don't remember the format it had originally since I reformatted mine to ext4. I run Linux.) I don't know if the USB connectors on the Playstation or X-Box are USB3. You will need a USB3 port on the device to play movies. USB2 is not fast enough. Depending on the model of your TV, you might be able to use the USB port on the TV or BluRay player, if you have one.
