You can do both, when you first hook it up to your mac you will have to reformat it. Afterwards it will ask you if you want to use it with time machine. Select yes and you can store your files and time machine backups together.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You could store both on it. I think you would need to partition the disk into 2 logical disks (using Disk Utility), though. It's not a good idea to store files on the same logical disk as general files. Keep in mind, though, that if this drive fails you will lose EVERYTHING. Because you will have 2 Logical drives on 1 Physical drive, and if the Physical drive fails EVERYTHING on it fails.
