“Why does this "Best Buy exclusive" drive have only a 2-year warranty, while the WD MyBook and Passport versions both have a 3-year warranty?”

the 3 year warranty is only for old models. all WD externals manufactured in late 2016 and going forward only have a 2 year warranty. that includes the new rectangular design My book and Passport units. this is an industry wide thing, nothing to do with best buy. seagate reduced their warranties to 2 years a long time ago. having said that, this best buy exclusive drive is way better than the my book products because it contains a much higher quality hard drive inside.

But in my search, I've read that this Red Drive is Business Class that is RAID Ready & always on, with tighter packaging inside the 2.5" drive frame, meaning that it may develop more heat & die earlier. Wish we could see temperature specs for both EasyStore & MyBook drives side by side. This could explain the warrany difference. I just seen the new 8T MyBook & it comes with the extra year of warranty. Use caution & unplug when not in use, & keep a backup of the backup.
