Usually the external drives have no affect on the start-up or login to a computer. Sometime if the drive is protected with the software on it , It may be password protected and won't allow opening without the proper password.

Just be sure when you save files that they're not being saved to the Passport external drive, as it belongs to someone else who might accidentally walk away with your files.
