Just a guess is that they found better ways to do backups and or security issues. Why wouldn't you want the latest and greatest software? Usually before it updates it tells you what it fixes. Check with WD
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Some people like the convenience of a program that will back up an entire hard drive. This hard drive comes with that program well as Window OS. If you use the program or not the upgrade will stop the pop-up messages.

Which also comes with a few other free applications and possible useful information that you might be interested in. But this update or software add-on is not mandatory.
