Does not require charging, it is an external drive - 2 TB in the size of a deck of cards and very portable.

the only power source it needs is to plug into your USB port on computer/laptop, it should not require charging. And yes it works like a flash drive, however, I like the one I purchased because it has added 2 TBs to my ability to save files and increase the storage space available for my laptop. hope this helps !
