• i would find a small u shaped stand of some kind, it is not "balanced" for side use (the edge is not that thick) unless you have something to lean against or on, it looks very easy to fall over

• The drive can be in any position you want. you just want air flow and dont move it when its spinning.

• It should not matter if standing or flat. Logically speaking though... better heat dissipation when standing up.
