Yes, the external antenna should be pointed at the nearest tower. You can use an app like Open Signal or Cell Tower Locator to find the closest tower on your phone. Or, you can use a couple different websites like https://www.cellmapper.net/map or https://www.scadacore.com/tools/rf-path/cell-tower-map-united-states/.

I pointed mine toward the strongest signal on my cell outside. It boosted my phone from 0 to 1 bar to 3 to 4 bars. I love it!
