You need internet service if you want to watch any of the apps through the Roku streaming service. However, if you want to use it for a monitor and to watch with an HDTV antenna then no Internet service is required

You can download free movie apps like. Pluto tv or vudu. I don't have cable or an antenna. I have multiple apps like netflix. I can watch tv series and movies in this way.
