“I have a Roku connected into HDMI 1. Can't seem to get audio out to older stereo/equalizer via red white yellow rca cable. Tried running from tv to stereo and then from tv to vcr to stereo. Puzzled, can you clarify solution?”

I believe the red, white, and yellow inputs are only to be used as an input. You may need to try using the headphone jack. You'll need an adapter to convert a male 3.5 mm Jack to Male RCA white and red. You won't need the VCR.
