“Do I need to cut a vent hole in the wall or cabinet for the microwave to operate? Are the vent holes only for the vent fan or is it required for cooling of the microwave during operation? I would prefer not to cut/install vent if only for the vent fan.”

Short answer is no. The microwave comes already setup for recirculate the air in the kitchen, but the cabinet has to be less than 14" deep. It's not mandatory to vent it outside or to the roof. Also, it states on the manual that if the microwave gets too hot from the range cooking temperature it will turn the fan automatically until it cools down and can't turn off manually until is safe again.

However, you need to cut holes in the bottom of the cabinet to accommodate the 3-prong plug to be plugged in the outlet above. Also 2 holes to support the front of the microhood.
