• Yes..the vents at the back can be setup where the airflow goes up. This is in shown in the manual and this feature has been in older microwaves too.

• Mine is set up without a vent. The exhaust fan functions just fine without an external vent. I got the impression from my installer that it is capable of venting as you are describing, however. Hopefully you can find a definitive answer. I love this microwave.
