You can choose a preset cook time by using their number codes. For instance, there is number assigned to the Defrost function. If you want to defrost, you can enter the number for that, then choose the number that corresponds to the type of food (ground meat, etc) then enter the weight. The codes are on the inside at the bottom of the front panel. I have used them and they are pretty darn accurate.
