No it can not needs to be at 40 degrees to operate right. Mine is in an area about 50 degrees and operates well.

Yes we have had this unit in our garage for 3 weeks now and have had no issues. Since this is a frost free freezer this works very well in cold temperatures.

So far, it is working well in unheated garage.

I have my freezer in basement. I would say as long as it doesn't get wet, it should be fine, might even save on your energy bill.
