• Yes you must use the water filter if you want filtered water, if not, I would say no.

• Hello Michael, the WRS571CIHW can be used without a filter. You can just remove any existing filter in the unit, you may see a few water drops, but the unit will not leak. Your water and Ice will then be just like the water from your tap.
