• This is not a downdraft cooktop. Other answers indicate that you must have a vent system with this type of cooktop. Not required by code in most areas unless you are using an open broiler, which is typically found in restaurant kitchens. If you have a good natural ventilation in your kitchen, you'll be just fine and legal with a smooth top and no downdraft. Occasional smokiness? Open a window or turn on a ceiling fan.

• No it must be vented above. The only decent downdraft I have found is Jenn-Air.
