“I am not happy with the water levels of this washer based on the sensor but I noticed that once the wash cycle started and I open the lid after I close it the washer adds more water to the tub (not a lot but some). Is that normal?”

It is normal. But after a while, I stopped opening and closing it because it took too long. I then started filling up a 5 gal bucket with water and adding it to the machine. I got tired of that too. Finally. I decided to take a loss a purchase another machine. Cut your losses.
