“I just bought this washer and with the first load I used hot water and there is steam coming up from the lid that Fogs up the controls. Is this normal? will this happen every time I use hot water?”

Yes that is normal because hot water rises and creates steam so that the fibers of your clothes can open so water can penetrate stains
