Thank you for your question! An external hard drive may be used with Xbox Series S, however new games that have been optimized for Xbox Series X/S must be installed on the console's internal drive. Backward-compatible Xbox games that are not optimized for Xbox Series X/S may be stored and played directly from an external drive. Please try again later.The Series S DOES support USB-based external hard drives, however... games that are designed for next-gen cannot be played off of the external drive. You have to transfer them to and from the internal memory. This is due to their optimization around the built-in SSD. Thankfully it's really easy to tell when a game needs the SSD to run, as you'll see a "Series S/X" badge on the game tile in your library. Backwards compatible games can be played off the external drive.
