Vinyl records do not output a 5.1 signal. You could use a Dolby pro logic setting to artificially convert your stereo output to 5.1. Purists would consider this a sacrilege but if you prefer it that way, go for it. Bluray audio or SACD will give you true surround audio. My Beatles 50th anniversary sets have blurays that have sensational dts surround mixes.
