“I live in an apartment so I can't have "thunderous" bass. I know the subwoofer is adjustable and I do want SOME soft, subtle bass. Are there enough sub adjustments between the receiver & sub to keep everything just audible enough and fairly balanced?”

Turn the bass to negative whatever the lowest setting is on the receiver. Then adjust the bass on the subwoofer. Now all your speakers won't be putting out bass, just your subwoofer. You can make it have enough to sound good, and not rumble everything.
