You definitely want a center speaker, as it will allow you to hear the voices and talking clearer and at a good volume, and still hear your front and rear speakers, without having to turn the volume up louder to hear everything as well. They don't have to be any certain distance apart, but assuming your front speakers are approximately 12 feet apart or so, just center the speaker between them, maybe 6 feet apart. Center speaker makes all the difference, and you may want to get a sub woofer, to give you the feel of being in the movie with the base effects

Most of the dialogue in a movie is coded to the center speaker, in my opinion probably the most important speaker in your home theatre set up. The center speaker should be placed directly above (or in the case of in wall below) your television, and the right and left speakers should be placed equal distance from the center speaker, preferably at the edge of your sound stage. If you can't create the ideal sound stage, make sure that the right and left speakers are placed equal distance from the center. While these speakers are solid, they are great universal speaker with a large frequency range, and they are sold in pair, you may want to consider investing in a center channel speaker which is a strong mid range performer and will really allow the dialogue from movies to be clearly and easily understood. Personally I like a wide center channel speaker in the wall directly below the television set and then I would put two pairs of these for my front right/left and surround right/left.
