“Is it possible to hook up a subwoofer to this receiver? Even if the sub has it's own integrated amplifier. Or would I need a unit with a dedicated channel for a subwoofer? (i.e. like a 5.1 receiver)”

All of the subwoofers that I have owned have the ability to except the stereo speaker output from the receiver and divide it up appropriately between the subwoofer and the satellite speakers. This is accomplished inside the subwoofer cabinet. Check that the subwoofer will allow this basic configuration , Most will.
