“When I connect my phone or computer to this receiver via bluetooth, whatever music or audio application which played last (spotify, itunes, youtube) automatically begins playing at my device's full volume. Very annoying. Is there any way to fix this?”

Not a receiver issue. It is a phone issue.Receiver does NOT access your phone. It receives whatever your phone sends it via blutooth it sends nothing to your phone itself.
