“How warm is this receiver when in standby mode? It is going to be out in the open and when I'm not listening to music I want to 1) protect the interior from dust and 2) not have to see the inner workings through the top.”

I have mine installed in my garage , when not in use I keep it covered with a microfiber towel to keep dust from settling on it , unit doesn't stay hot.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I presume you mean "Off" by standby mode. There is no warmth at all. Dust, like ants & weeds, is everywhere and has nothing to do with the receiver. There are 3 rows of top vents which are very narrow. If you have not bought a receiver in a long time, it takes a bit getting use to but it works. Read the instructions. One thing you will notice repeatedly for most receiver reviews, is the volume control. This one goes from 1 to 100 but you have to get to 40 or 50 to get to a reasonable listening level. It's normal with cheaper receivers. While this one costs a bit more than other low priced receivers, I liked that it was not made in China but in Malaysia. I think they has higher quality control.
